![]() The North Mountain Sportsmen's Association offers various programs geared
towards educating today's youth in the shooting sports and firearms safety.
Our youth events are conducted by members who are NRA certified instructors
in various disciplines. We currently have 14 certified instructors and
countless volunteers who also assist in our youth programs. We are the home grounds for the Sullivan County 4-H Shooting Sports Program. Each year, NMSA members and volunteers provide guidance in shotgun, .22 rifle and air rifle to an average of 50 children. 4-H members develop and improve their firearms skills and marksmanship while developing life skills, responsibility, social skills and respect. 4-Her's have gone on to participate in various shooting sports events for both local, state and national competition. The NMSA also offers a Youth Field Day to kids ages 7-15 each year. The event is sponsored by NMSA, the PA Game Commission and individual club members. The event focuses on a family approach to the shooting sports and outdoor recreation. With our field day, parents or guardians are required to be with the kids. Participants are introduced to shotgunning, .22 riflery, air riflery, archery, SASS cowboy action, wildlife obstacle course, forestry and fire prevention, fishing and a special event for each year. Once again, our certified instructors provide guidance and direction on all of the firearms stations. Earth Day events are a special school program that NMSA, the East Lycoming School District and Sullivan County Schools provide to sixth grade students. Students spend a full day at the club grounds and learn about firearms safety, wildlife rehabilitation, archery and primitive sporting arms, Native American traditions and use of game, shotgunning, .22 riflery and wildlife restoration efforts and successes in Pennsylvania. Students also participate in a team event conducted by the PA Game Commission in wildlife education and an outdoor skills course. The NMSA has a great working relationship with the PA Game Commission and serves as host to Sullivan Counties Hunter-Trapper Education Programs. The NMSA club grounds becomes a working field course for students as club members and PGC Instructors lead them through various scenarios of hunting and trapping situations. Students experience hands-on learning and educational experience second to none in Hunter-Trapper Education. Students also participate in live fire programs to familiarize themselves with various sporting arms. The NMSA provides free lunches to our future hunters and trappers during the courses and students leave knowing they have the tools and foundation to represent our sport in a positive way. Children are our future and the membership of the North Mountain Sportsmen's Association is committed to doing our part to develop and institute firearms safety and respect along with a respect for the outdoors that we all enjoy so much.
